Royal retain league title

Royal College, under their skipper Shabith Feroze, displayed outstanding rugby this season to keep the Singer League title at Reid Avenue. 

With this win, they also retained the B.C. Angie Trophy for one more year.

Liyanapathirana’s penalty drew first blood for St. Peter’s College while Royal College replied with a Ifham Fareed try and Dulan Gunawardena conversion. A Mubeen Faleel try gave Royal a 12-3 lead at the breather after Liyanapathirana missed his penalty kick shortly before halftime.

After the turnaround a Faiz try and Liyanapathirana conversion took the scores to 12-10 but it was short-lived as Royal advanced further with Fareed’s second try. Liyanapathirana’s penalty took the lads from Bambalapitiya a step closer at 17-13 with a four-point deficit for the lads from Bambalapitiya. Skipper Feroze, who had a grand game and season, scored his first try later in the second half. He was lightning fast and unstoppable, with his decision-making on the spot. St. Peter’s lost its grip after a Pasindu Fernando try and a Dulan penalty.  

Trinity finish on 

a winning note

Trinity College, coming out for the first time this season under Head Coach and Old Boy Inthi Marikar, ended on a winning note by beating Zahira College 34-13 and finishing sixth. This win will allow Trinity to feature in the Milo Knockout rugby competition which will kick off later this week with a game against St. Peter’s.

Trinity scored their tries through Praveenda Wijethilake (2), skipper Avishka Shiek, Vishwa Ranaraja, Reshan Bandaranayake and Nethwara Dulanjith. Sakalasooriya made two of the try conversions. For the lads from Maradana, tries were scored by Deen and Luqman with Samsudeen converting one try and a penalty. 

Kingswood retain L.E. Blaze Trophy

Kingswood College continued their domination in the L.E. Blaze Trophy rugby encounter when they outclassed Wesley College 31-13 in Colombo. Kingswood ended the season fifth while Wesley ended a disappointing seventh only ahead of Zahira College. Wesley will miss out on the Milo Knockout rugby competition unless one of the top six teams pull out.

Tharindu Waligampola (2), Sachintha Seneviratne and Milan Weerasinghe scored the tries while Hirusjan Sampath converted four of them and put over a penalty. Meanwhile for Wesley, Sahan Hansaja (2) scored both tries and Mursheed Zubair put over one conversion and a penalty.

Joes finish Singer League 2018 second

St. Joseph’s College ended their Singer League campaign second when they edged out Isipathana by 34 points (4 goals, 2 penalties) to 29 points (3 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty) at Havelock Park yesterday.

At halftime, the winners led 20-17.  

Isipathana was pushed to fourth in the league this year. (SJ)
