The Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota produced a run glut as Galle replying to Colombo’s first innings total of 405 ran up a massive 703-9 with no less than four batsmen getting into three-figures in a record-equalling run spree on the fourth and final day of the National Super League four-day match yesterday.
With such high scoring from both teams the match eventually ended in a draw with Galle taking first innings points from Colombo.
The Galle innings featured two double century partnerships. Following the 210-run stand for third wicket between Lakshan Edirisinghe (129) and Angelo Mathews (105) on the third day, Mahesh Kumara and Ramesh Mendis, the Galle skipper took their overnight partnership to 225 for the sixth wicket. Wicketkeeper/batsman Kumara from Army SC hit a career best 151 off 262 balls (12 fours) – his fourth first-class century. Mendis, the Sri Lanka test spin all-rounder who has a triple century in first-class cricket scored his ninth century – a 256-ball effort for 149 that comprised 13 fours and a six.
It was the seventh instance in first-class cricket in Sri Lanka that four batsmen had scored centuries in one innings – four of those instances took place in test matches involving Sri Lanka and the other two in domestic matches – Basnahira v Ruhuna in an inter-provincial match played at Colts Grounds in 2010 and NCC v Colts at the Galle Cricket Stadium in a Premier League Tier ‘A’ match in 2018.
