Bhutan consolidated their position for a spot in the semi-finals after a comfortable 4-1 win over Sri Lanka in their SAFF Women’s Football Tournament encounter at the Dasharath Stadium in Nepal yesterday.
The high riding Bhutan team, who went out as favourites in this game after forcing a nil-all draw against host Nepal a few days back, had to work hard until the last quarter of the match, where they booted two goals in quick succession after being held 2-1 until that stage. The winners used their immense experience and overran the Lankan defence, which failed to contain the Bhutan firepower.
Even though it was a loss for the Lankan camp, their performance was highly commendable as they managed to score at least one goal without losing with a barren scoreboard, with skipper Thushani Madushika scoring the solitary goal.
With this result, the Lankan team is almost out from the next stage of this competition, and will lock horns with host Nepal in in their final fixture at the same venue in a few days.
