Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) together with South Asia Gateway Terminals Ltd. (SAGT), sponsor of Women’s Rugby in Sri Lanka, celebrated International Women’s day on 2 March.
Women have given a lot to sport and rugby over the years in Sri Lanka, and many more young girls are taking up the game. To mark this important day, SLR and SAGT joined hands with the endorsement of Asia Rugby – the region’s governing body – to conduct a ‘Training and Education’ program for young up and coming women rugby players.
Coaching staff such as Asela Deshapriya, Amila Chathuranga, Rohitha Rajapaksa and Nilfer Ibrahim led the sessions attended by more than 50 women. SLR President Lasitha Gunarathna, SLR Executive Director Rohan Gunarathna, SLR Women’s Rugby Executive Committee Member Thilangani Warakagoda and Vishmi Thenuwara from SAGT were also there to show their support towards the event which was coordinated by SLR women’s development officer Thanuja Weerakkody.
