Chilaw Marians CC Captain Dushan Vimukthi
Chilaw Marians CC, another team trying desperately to stave off a possible relegation at the end of the season, were at the receiving end of Ace Capital CC in their SLC Major Club 3-Day match which continued at the CCC grounds yesterday.
Replying to Ace Capital CC’s first innings of 324, Chilaw Marians CC, placed at the bottom of Group A, were fighting hard to grab those all-important first innings points, ending the second day at 223-8. They trail by 101 runs with two wickets in hand.
Ace Capital CC are still strong favourites to take first innings points, but one has to give credit to Chilaw Marians CC’s eighth wicket pair, skipper Dushan Vimukthi and Suminda Lakshan, who have lifted their team from a hopeless 169-7 with a resolute stand of 48 in 15 overs. Lakshan was dismissed shortly before the close for 29, but Vimukthi, playing a gallant innings of 54* off 155 balls (4 fours, 1 six), lived to fight another day.
Off-spinner Rohan Jayatissa, a prolific wicket-taker in domestic cricket, caused the main damage, finishing the day with 4/67 off 29 overs.
Ace Capital CC added 26 to their overnight score of 298-6, with left-arm spinner Duvindu Tillakaratne (son of former Sri Lanka Captain Hashan Tillakaratne) taking his 15th five-fer (5/68) for Chilaw Marians CC.
The match continues on its third and final day today. – [ST]
