Crucial weekend for clubs trying to avoid relegation

The SLC Major Club 3-day tournament hots up this weekend with the top two teams of each group pitting each other for a place in the final. The team that tops the group qualifies for the final.

The two matches taking pride of place are between Group A leaders Bloomfield and second placed Ace Capital CC at Navy grounds, Welisara and Group B leaders NCC and second placed Moors SC at De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa. While NCC hold onto an eight-point lead over Moors SC, only a fraction of points separate Bloomfield from Ace Capital CC.

With only two more weekends of matches left to complete the group stages, the contest from here onwards is going to be a tough contest not only for teams vying for the top spot in the group, but also for teams trying to avoid relegation to Tier B. Struggling for survival is one of the top clubs in the circuit SSC who are second from the bottom of Group B and without a win for the season so far. They host Tamil Union in what could be a make-or-break match for them. SSC needs at least a first innings win here to keep their chances of avoiding relegation alive. At the same time, Tamil Union who are third in the group would also want to increase their chances of qualifying for the final by topping the group. So, it’s going to be a keenly contested affair over the next three days.

Four other clubs fighting to avoid relegation are also in action from today. Nugegoda SWC and Kandy Customs CC play at Hambantota, while the bottom two clubs from Group A Badureliya SC and Negombo CC play Chilaw Marians CC at Maggona and Panadura SC at FTZ grounds Katunayake respectively.

In the other matches starting today, CCC host Kurunegala YCC at CCC grounds, and Police SC play Colts at Police grounds.
