SLC Major Club 3-day tournament SSC make late comeback to dismiss NCC for 379

SSC made a comeback late in the day to bowl out NCC for 379 on the opening day of their SLC Major Club 3-day match played at the NCC grounds yesterday.

Half-centuries from NCC’s top three batters Niroshan Dickwella (91 off 63 balls, 12 fours, 2 sixes), Lahiru Udara (51 off 41 balls, 11 fours) and Kamil Mishara (77 off 143 balls, 12 fours) saw them heading for a massive first innings total at 280-2, but SSC managed to pull back through off-spinner Nipun Dananjaya (3/19) and capture the remaining 8 wickets for 119 runs.

A career best knock of 162* off 247 balls (14 fours, 1 six) by Roshan Wijenayake saw Nugegoda SWC fighting with SSC to avoid relegation reach 319-7 against BRC at De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa. Wijenayake shared a second wicket stand of 188 with skipper Tillakaratne Sampath (77 off 157 balls, 9 fours, 1 six).

CCC, Moors SC, Negombo CC and Police SC grabbed first innings points on the opening day of their respective matches. CCC dismissed Kandy Customs CC for 165 (Imesh Udayanga 58) and replied with 175-7 by the close at the CCC grounds. Moors SC Captain Ramesh Mendis took 4/35 to dismiss Kurunegala YCC for 136 at Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala. In reply Moors SC scored 175-5 courtesy fifties from Janishka Perera (52) and Sohan de Livera (78). In a low scoring game at BOI Katunayake, Negombo CC, another club fighting against relegation scored 140 (Chanaka Komasaru 4/41, Chanaka Ruwansiri 4/21) and bowled out Badureliya SC for 128 (Seamer Hansaja Hiruna career best 4/39 in his second first-class match, Nishan Peiris 3/47). Defending joint champs Police SC were in a strong position against Ace Capital CC at Police grounds. Spinners Nalin Priyadarshana (5/45) and Dilum Sudeera (5/60) took five wickets apiece as Ace Capital CC were bundled out for 115. Police SC scored 219-8 in reply to lead by 104 runs. Avishka Tharindu scored 70 and Captain Ashen Bandara 51.

Bloomfield vying for the top spot in Group A were dismissed for 244 by Panadura SC at Bloomfield grounds. Skipper Nipun Karunanayake top scored with 81 off 190 balls (11 fours) and Ravindu Fernando a run-a-ball 54 (7 fours). Panadura SC replied with 59-0 by stumps.

Bottom of Group A Ragama CC were in dire straits on the second day of their match against Chilaw Marians CC at Maggona. Replying to Chilaw Marians CC’s first innings of 276, Ragama CC were shot out for 89 in their first innings and following-on were 155-4, still trailing by 32 runs. Off-spinner Dushan Vimukthi was the chief destroyer of the Ragama CC batting with figures of 8/39 – his 16th five-fer in first-class cricket. Saminda Fernando was unbeaten on 83 off 134 balls (6 fours, 1 six) in Ragama’s second essay. All matches will continue today. (ST)
