The writ petition brought by 12 former cricketers, administrators and prominent personalities seeking constitutional reforms in the controlling body for cricket in the country – Sri Lanka Cricket will be taken up for hearing on 11 October.
This has been made possible by present Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe consenting to the petitioners’ appeal to amend the constitution. The Sports Minister it is learnt has sent a letter to the Attorney General’s Department, saying he has no issue in the said matter and for the Court of Appeal to proceed. The AG’s department is expected to submit the Sports Minister’s letter during the hearing.
The writ application was filed in February 2021 by 12 petitioners namely Michael Tissera, Sidath Wettimuny, Muttiah Muralitharan, Justice (Retd.) Saleem Marsoof PC, Dinal Phillips PC, Kushil Gunasekera, Dr. Palitha Kohona, Rienzie Wijetilleke, Vijaya Malalasekera, Ana Punchihewa, Somasundaram Skandakumar and Thilan Wijesinghe, seeking the restructuring of Sri Lanka Cricket’s governance and voting structure.
The respondents include the Sports Minister, Sri Lanka Cricket President and 17 other office-bearers.
Initially, the writ petition was opposed by former Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa.
