Sri Lanka Cricket officially opened its Cricket Museum yesterday, displaying its rich history to the world. Located at SLC Headquarters on Maitland Place, the museum has in display mementos and trophies from some of the most significant moments of Sri Lanka’s cricketing history.
The move comes after the Asian Cricket Council, which had been the previous occupants of the space, moved its headquarters to Dubai.
The Cricket Museum was declared opened last morning by Minister of Sports Harin Fernando, while SLC Competent Authority Chulananda Perera, SLC CEO Ashley De Silva and SLC COO Jerome Jayaratne were also present during the occasion. ODI and T20 Captain Lasith Malinga also took part in the opening ceremony, along with the several sponsors of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The Museum has dedicated sections focusing on Sri Lanka’s Test, ODI and T20I history, as well as its Pre-Test era.
There are also special corners within the museum celebrating iconic moments such as the 1996 World Cup and 2014 T20 World Cup wins, while the country’s impressive record in ‘Asia Cup’ tournaments, among others, is also documented.
A ‘Hall of Fame’ plaque meanwhile displays a list of names of legendary Sri Lanka Test players, and past and present captains of all formats.
The museum will be opened for public viewing daily from 9.00 am to 5:00 pm with school children given free entrance, a move aimed at inspiring a new generation of kids to take up the sport.
