Sri Lanka Cricket declared open the newly built Ratnapura District Cricket Ground in Monarawila on 30 March, thus providing a much-needed facility for the area, which will help enhance the game in the Sabaragamuwa Province.
The new ground, which consists of seven centre turf wickets, will enable schools and clubs in the district to utilise the ground to play matches, conduct practice sessions, and also play Under-19 cricket.
Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva declared the facility open, along with the participation of Ratnapura District Cricket Association President Kanchana Jayaratne, Sri Lanka Cricket Consultant Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka T20I Captain Wanindu Hasaranga, and Sri Lanka National player Pathum Nissanka.
Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva, the members of the executive committee of Sri Lanka Cricket, and officials of the Ratnapura District Cricket Association and Uva Province Cricket Association were present at the opening.
Cabinet Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi and State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura also graced the occasion.
Constructed under Sri Lanka Cricket’s program to build ‘District Cricket Grounds’, covering all the districts in the country, the new ground will be equipped with five side turf wickets and two concrete wickets in the near future. It is the 11th such district ground opened by SLC.
