  • “We are meeting sponsors and Ministry officials”: Susantha Mendis

The interrupted Under 19 Schools rugby season is fading further away from all due to the delay in conducting the G.C.E. Advanced Level examinations, followed by the Ordinary Level exams in December.

Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) Vice President Susantha Mendis said: “We are meeting the sponsors, Ministry of Education and Sports Ministry officials in the near future to decide the fate of the remaining season. It is in a major doubt after the postponement of the Advanced Level exams and followed soon by Ordinary Level examinations. We need to give at least six weeks for them to train and currently no training is taking place in contact games due to COVID-19.”

Susantha added: “We have already incurred some cost and we will need to be reimbursed by our new sponsors, Dialog. Further we need to wait and see on the school sponsorship package as well. We were to host the Asia Rugby Under 19 Top 4 in Colombo during December 2020 that too will be either postponed or cancelled.

“If we push the season beyond 2020 then we will need to start the next season (2021) with a delay. After this season is over we need to give a break of at least two months for injury recoveries as well. We will meet the officials and see the way forward, if at least we can organise the knock out and sevens or play only one round of the league.” (SJ)
