Cricketing old boys of St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa in year 1971 had a fun-filled reunion at the Carlton Club, Moratuwa on 27 January. The idea behind this reunion after a lapse of 46 years was to rekindle long lost friendships and to get together for common good in support of the college and the wider community.

The day’s proceedings started with the arrival of the Chief Guest Sarath Perera, who is a big match winning captain of the college and a former Sri Lanka schools fast bowler who went on to represent Moratuwa Sports Club in division 1 cricket and the dashing Romesh Kaluwitharana, member of the World Cup winning Sri Lanka side as the Guest of Honour.

Special invitees included the Rector of St. Sebastian’s College Rev. Fr. Ranjith Andradi, Rev. Sr. Chamalee and many other distinguished old boys of the college.  After the lighting of the oil lamp, the National Flag and college flag were hoisted to a heartening rendition of the National Anthem and college anthem by those present.

The highlight of the day was the contest for Milroy/Fernando Challenge trophy, where the under 14 side of 1971 took on the under 16 side of same year in a limited overs softball match.  Under 16 batting first scored 117 runs thanks to some good performances by Rodney Perera who retired for 42 runs, Milroy Paul retired for 16 runs, and Hubert Gunasekara.

In reply Under 14 managed to go past the target thanks to a scintillating knock by Rohan Fernando who remained unbeaten on 57.  He was ably supported by Lindsay Fernando, Dominic Silva and Sunil T. Fernando. Rohan Fernando was declared Man of the Match and Best Batsman, Milroy Paul the Best Bowler and Hubert Gunasekera the Best Fielder. Under 14 team captained by Professor Ranil Fernando were declared winners of the inaugural year’s contest.

The match was followed by a fellowship to the scintillating music of Manoj Fernando on the keyboards ably supported by Angelo Fernando on vocals, both distinguished old boys of the college who rocked the crowd present with some evergreen baila and contemporary music.

Sunil T. Fernando, a distinguished old boy and a film producer, graced the occasion with several local film personalities.

The event was made possible by the generous contribution of many including main sponsors Russels Tea and Yeti Isotonic drinks. Uncle Sam’s Kitchen who was also a sponsor catered a tasty breakfast and lunch.

Malcolm Perera saw to all of the organising and behind the scenes activity which ensured that the event was a rollicking success!
