The squad was named after conclusion of the recently-concluded Mercantile Rugby Sevens 2019 which was used as a yardstick for the National Sevens selections. Gemunu Cheethiya, Janidu Dilshan, Vishwa Ranaraja, Ishara Liyanage, Kavinda Keshan and Ravindu Anjula, all junior Sri Lanka Under 20 players in the Asian sevens event in 2018, caught the selectors’ eyes.
Surprisingly the player of the final, Thilina Wijesinghe, was in the initial pool named by Rohan Abeykkoon and his team.
Each Asian leg event will consist of 12 players with three officials.
