St Joseph’s College continued their unbeaten run in the Singer League 2019 outplaying Trinity College by 37 points (5 tries, 3 conversions, 2 penalties) to 19 points (3 tries, 2 conversions) at Havelock Park yesterday.
At the short breather Joes led 25/7.
Joes did settle earlier in the game and dominated proceedings through their speedy three quarter line. Rashene Goonawardena their scrum half was omnipresent. He had a grand game with his option either to work the three quarters or kick ahead. He and Santhush Algama, playing at fly half, combined well for the Maradana outfit. Trinity for their part could not settle into their usual game. They conceded too many points in the first half, and they could not come back in to the game as the points deficit was too huge for a second half catch up. They did well in the later half through some powerful moves but went out of time. Their kick to touch was a major concern and a number of missed tackles in their defence was a sorry sight. Some of Rohan Fernando’s decision making too was questionable.
Joes drew first blood through a Tharindu Madushan try which Santhush Algama converted for an early lead. Another Algama penalty took Joes in to a solid 10 to nothing lead. Tharindu De Alwis, the Joes skipper, handed off a few Trinity defenders to touch down. Algama was accurate in his kick at goal. An Algama penalty and a second Tharindu De Alwis try took the Joes to 25 points. Trinity scored their only try through their centre, Tevin Karunanayake.
After the turn around Joes scored through Jayaratne and Sudaraka Devapriya. Trinity scored two tries through Geeshapa Kulatunge and Rashen Bandaranayake.
Elsewhere, Science College pulled off a good 22 points (4 tries, 1 conversion) to 10 points (1 try, 1 conversion, 1 penalty) win over St Anthony’s College in Nittawela. At the short breather visitors led 17/ to 3. (SJ)
