St. Joseph’s College claimed their first cup this season when they outclassed league champions Royal College 21-12 in a tense and entertaining Singer Schools Sevens 2018 final played at the Royal Sports Complex yesterday.
At halftime St. Joseph’s College led 14-5. Himesh Dissanayake (2) and Keshan Kavinda scored for the winners while for the losers Thulaib Hassen and Janidu Dilshan were the try-scorers. Royal skipper Shabith Feroze, who had a grand game, was carried off the field due to an injury in the latter half. The Joes were coached by Nilfer Ibrahim with Anura Walpola assisting him.
In the Plate segment, Vidyartha College put up a brave effort to beat defending Sevens champions S. Thomas’ College 28-0 in a one-sided affair. Kingswood College accounted for the Bowl, beating Thurstan College 29-0. Richmond did not return empty-handed to Galle, edging out Piliyandala MMV 21-19.
The Sri Lanka Under-20 outfit will be selected shortly for next month’s Asian Sevens 2018, which will take place in Hong Kong at the Kings Park Rugby grounds.
