Yupun Abeykoon
Champion Sprinter Yupun Abeykoon has decided to withdraw from the upcoming Asian Games which is to commence later this month in China.
In a lengthy letter released to various social media platforms, he has stated that he was compelled to take this decision due to a hamstring injury which aggravated a few months back. The recovery process might take more time and he is unable to give his best to his country under these circumstances.
He made this shocking announcement a few days after the National Olympic Committee had taken steps to appoint him as the team Captain of the Asian Games contingent.
Tagged as South Asia’s fastest man, Yupun won a bronze medal in the 100m at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 10.14 seconds. He was the favourite to win gold at the Asian Games.
Sri Lanka Cricket offered Yupun $ 100,000 on a request made by the Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe in order for him to improve his skills. He has been training in Italy for about 11 months. (AN)
