Sports law including Constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket to be amended

The Attorney General yesterday informed the Court of Appeal that the Minister of Sports is in the process of preparing amendments to the Sports Regulation pertaining to the registration of National Sports Association which includes Sri Lanka Cricket. 

They have further informed that the Sports Minister has sent a letter to them confirming that he will be taking steps to amend the Sports Law by a panel of experts with due instructions to submit to him, an appropriate draft, which could cover Cricket as well. Moreover, he specified that he will also seek the guidance and expert advise of the ICC, as it has indeed provided, in respect of the constitutions of other cricket bodies internationally. 

Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena PC appearing for the Sports Minister made these statements when the writ petition filed by a group of prominent individuals including former professional cricketers, which was taken up on 5 December 2022 in the Court of Appeal before Justice M.T. Mohamed Laffar. 

This writ application was instituted purely in the public interest and indeed, in the national interests, when Sri Lanka Cricket has suffered acutely deteriorating fortunes and suffered persistent occurrences of mismanagement, financial and cricketing debacles, which are effectively self-inflicted, as a result of dishonest, power hungry and corrupt officials and office bearers being at the helm.  The Petitioners were represented by the President’s Counsel Sanjeeva Jayawardena with Attorneys-at-Law Dr. Milhan Mohamed and Rushani Thiyagaraj on the instructions of Sudath Perera Associates.
