Sri Lanka Cricket denies allegations of payments or perks to Deshabandu

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) yesterday firmly denied allegations that it provided payments or any other perks to suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Thennakoon.

“We categorically state that Sri Lanka Cricket has not made any payment, provided any laptop, mobile phone, or other perks to Deshabandu Thennakoon, nor has he been engaged as a consultant or in any other capacity with SLC,” an official statement issued by the Board noted.

SLC also refuted claims that Thennakoon had been engaged as a consultant or held any position within the organisation.

The statement was released in response to remarks made by MP Hesha Withanage under Parliamentary privileges.

SLC condemned the allegations as ‘unfounded and misleading’, urging public figures to act responsibly when making statements that could damage the reputation and integrity of institutions and individuals.

MP Withanage’s statement comes amid heightened scrutiny over Thennakoon, who is currently under investigation for his alleged involvement in a 2023 shooting incident in Weligama.

The SLC’s strong rebuttal signals its intent to distance itself from any controversy linked to the matter.
