Sri Lanka Cricket elections: A one-horse race today

The 64th Annual General Meeting of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will be held today at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo, with virtually all incumbent posts set to be retained by the respective individuals more or less uncontested for another two-year term (2025-27).

Gymkhana Club (Colombo Cricket Club) President Shammi Silva is expected to retain his position as President of SLC for another two-year term, at the end of which he will complete eight years at the helm, thanks to the amended Sports Law that allows an elected official to continue for two four-year terms. Having held the post of SLC Treasurer from 2016-19, he was first elected SLC President in 2019, the position of which he has successfully contested and retained over the years.

The two Vice President posts, as well as the Treasurer, Assistant Secretary, and Assistant Treasurer posts, are also expected to be uncontested.

The only post that needs to be filled is the Secretary’s, where a void was created by the resignation of Mohan de Silva in November 2023. Assistant Secretary Chryshantha Kapuwatte has been playing the role of Acting Secretary since then.

Kapuwatte, along with Bandula Dissanayake and Samantha Dodanwela, have been nominated for the post.

One significant aspect of this year’s election of office bearers is that there will be only 59 voting members with one vote each, as compared to the past when there were 147 members with several of them holding onto two votes each.

This historic amendment to the SLC constitution took place on 20 December last year when at an Extraordinary General Meeting, the SLC membership approved significant amendments to the constitution; notably among them, a substantial reduction in the total number of voting members from 147 to 59.
