The Sri Lanka Rugby Annual General Meeting (AGM), originally scheduled for 21 January has been postponed due to pressing concerns raised by stakeholders.

This decision follows written complaints, including a formal letter from the President of Asia Rugby (AR) received by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports recently.

The complaints specifically address issues regarding the election process and the implementation of the amended Sri Lanka Rugby Constitution.

In response, the Minister appointed a special committee to investigate these concerns. The committee’s findings will guide necessary actions in consultation with the Attorney General of Sri Lanka, the Presidents of both World Rugby and Asia Rugby, and other relevant stakeholders. These measures aim to uphold the integrity of Sri Lanka Rugby and ensure compliance with the Sports Act No. 25 of 1973 and its subsequent amendments.

The decision to postpone the AGM shows the importance of maintaining transparency and fairness within the organisation. The inquiry’s conclusions will determine the steps needed to address the highlighted issues while ensuring alignment with international standards and legal requirements.

Sri Lanka Rugby Sports and Competent Authority Director General Shemal Fernando communicated the postponement, emphasising the necessity of the inquiry for the sport’s future. While regretting the inconvenience caused, the Director General expressed gratitude for the cooperation and understanding of all parties involved.

The outcome of this process is pivotal for the governance of Sri Lanka Rugby and its alignment with global rugby standards. Stakeholders, including World Rugby, Asia Rugby, and various local organisations, will continue to play a vital role in shaping the sport’s direction in Sri Lanka.

It’s evident that an Interim Committee to be appointed before the new constitutions comes in to place as per AR and WR but it’s interesting to see the action of the Provincial Unions.
