In a historic first, Sri Lanka Rugby President Rizly Illyas last week signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Georgia National Rugby Union’s Member Avtandil Ghibradze (Head of Georgian Veteran Rugby, due to the absence of its President Soso Tkemeladze) and in the presence of World Rugby’s Publisher David Samsonidze and SLR’s Representative to Georgia David Katsitadze in the city of Lentakhi in Georgia.
The landmark signing will see the two countries cementing the bonds of friendship both on and off the field of play as the two countries agreed on a range of mutual benefits ranging from the transfer of knowledge to player exchange programs and also invitations to contest in tournaments conducted in each other’s’ countries. The historic signing will also see SLR receiving much needed sponsorship benefits too.
The invitation of the SLR President Illyas to Georgia also coincided in Georgia’s historic first-time victory over a six nations side, when it trounced Italy by 28 points to 19 in the city of Batumi located on the Black Sea coast, which was also attended by its country’s President Salome Zourabichvili.
Speaking at the event SLR President Illyas said: “I take this opportunity to thank Georgian Rugby President Soso Tkemaladze for inviting me and making this signing of memorandum between the two countries. I am truly honoured as President of Sri Lanka rugby to be a part of this agreement which will uplift rugby and sponsorships.”
