The Cabinet of Ministers cleared to strengthen cooperation with the Australian Government in the field of sports through the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The objective of the new MoU is to facilitate the exchange of information and programs between athletes and sports officers from both nations.

The previous MoU, which was in effect for three years and aimed at developing sports cooperation between the two countries, concluded on 15 February 2020. In a bid to build upon the successes achieved during that time, both parties have proposed to sign a new MoU, extending its duration for an additional three years.

“In preparation for the new MoU, both parties have agreed upon a draft, signifying their shared commitment to promoting sports excellence and collaboration. The proposal received clearance from the Attorney General, ensuring its compliance with legal requirements and official endorsement,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday.

He said by identifying sports sectors that exhibit remarkable skills, the agreement aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the sports areas, ultimately benefiting both Sri Lanka and Australia.

The proposal to this effect submitted by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Roshan Ranasinghe was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday.
