Women’s Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka bowed out of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup when they suffered their third straight loss, losing to India by 82 runs in a Group A game played at Dubai under lights yesterday.

India, batting first on winning the toss, rattled off the highest total of the current tournament – 172-3 riding on half-centuries from the Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, whose 27-ball 50 (8 fours, 1 six) was India’s fastest in the Women’s T20 World Cup and, Vice Captain Smriti Mandhana who scored 50 off 38 balls (4 fours, 1 six).

Sri Lanka, whose batting has been their downfall, failed once again to reach 100 for the third successive match as they were bowled out for a disappointing 90 off the penultimate ball. They lost their top three batters – Vishmi Gunaratne, Chamari Athapaththu, and Harshitha Samarawickrama – for six in three overs and were never in the game after that.

Sri Lanka are without a win in their group and finish their World Cup campaign on Saturday against New Zealand at Sharjah.
