ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in UAE

  • Finish unbeaten in league stage
Sri Lanka Under-19 skipper Vihas Thewmika took three key top order wickets

Sri Lanka led by all-rounder Vihas Thewmika ended the league stage of the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup unbeaten when they beat Bangladesh by 7 runs in their final Group B fixture played at Dubai yesterday.

The win saw Sri Lanka top Group B with 3 wins and 6 points and Bangladesh runner-up with 2 wins and 4 points. Both teams qualified for the semi-finals. Their semi-final opponents will be known after the completion of the Group A matches today. Vimath Dinsara with a refined century (106 off 132 balls, 10 fours) was the key to Sri Lanka getting to a total of 228 after choosing to bat first. Dinsara figured in two noteworthy partnerships of 46 for the sixth wicket with Viran Chamuditha (20) and 50 for the seventh with Thewmika (22).

Bangladesh in reply were well placed to top Sri Lanka’s total when they were 172-3 at the start of the 40th over. But Thewmika’s dismissal of their top scorer Kalam Siddiki for 95 (off 134 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) triggered a collapse as Bangladesh lost their last four wickets for 15 runs to be all out for 221. Poor running between the wickets cost Bangladesh the match as four batsmen were run out. Thewmika finished with three wickets.

Scores: Sri Lanka (Under-19) 228 (49.2) (Vimath Dinsara 106, Lakvin Abeysinghe 21, Viran Chamuditha 20, Vihas Thewmika 22, Al Fahad 4/50, Rizan Hossan 3/40)

Bangladesh (Under-19) 221 (49.3) (Zawad Abrar 24, Kalam Siddiki 95, Debasish Deba 31, Farid Hasan 24*, Vihas Thewmika 3/37)
