Sri Lanka Women celebrate after sealing their semi-final spot
Sri Lanka won a nerve-tingling match of the round-robin, beating Bangladesh by three runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method to clinch their place in the semi-finals of the Women’s Asia Cup tournament currently being played in Sylhet, Bangladesh.
The win was Sri Lanka’s fourth on the trot after losing their opening fixture to India.
In a rain-affected match, Sri Lanka’s innings ended in 18.1 overs at 83-5 when rain interrupted play.
Bangladesh’s winning target was 41 in seven overs, but some excellent bowling by left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera who took four wickets for seven runs including three in one over choked them to 37-7.
The win saw Sri Lanka move to third spot in the standings with eight points, the same as second placed Pakistan whom they meet today in their final round robin match.
India heads the table with 10 points, having completed all their matches and along with Pakistan and Sri Lanka, have qualified for the semi-finals.
In fourth place are Thailand with six points having completed all their matches.
Bangladesh who are lying fifth with four points can still qualify for a place in the last four if they beat UAE in their final match today. The win would bring them level with Thailand on points and Bangladesh who have a better net run rate at present could qualify.
