After some anxious moments Syria beat Sri Lanka 3/0 to continue their winning streak at the Davis Cup Asia Oceanic group III event which was worked off in Jordan yesterday.

Syria who handed off hosts, Jordan 3/0 on the opening day continued their good work when they beat Sri Lanka by the same margin on day 2. Yasith de Silva after going down in the first set 4/6 fought back in the second to win 6/2 but his opponent Yacoub Makzoume was in superior class winning the third set 7/6 to take the game away from the Sri Lankan. 

This encounter went for over three hours of top-class tennis displayed by both players. Royalist Thehan Wijemanne, who played the Syrian number 1 Kareem Al Allaf, gave a good fight before going down. Thehan was handed off in the opening set 6 to nothing but stormed back to tie 4/4 at one point of the game in the second set but lost out in the end 6/4.

In the doubles game, Chatura Nilaweera and Thehan Wijemanne were beaten by Amer Naow and Kareem Al Allaf 6/4, 7/6 to claim a clean sweep for the Syrians. Meanwhile Hong Kong beat Malaysia 3/0 and Vietnam beat Qatar 2/1 on day 2 events.

Today Malaysia will meet Kuwait in Group A while in Group B Qatar will meet Oceanic outfit. In the Group C, Sri Lanka will meet Jordan. This will be must win game for the Sri Lankans.

  • Group C: Syria, Sri Lanka, Jordan
