Action from the Sri Lanka vs. Afghanistan match
By Althaf Nawaz
Sri Lanka Volleyball team notched up their third of the tournament after they beat Afghanistan by 3 sets to one at the Central Asian Men’s Volleyball Challenge Cup (CAVA) Tournament at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.
After going down to Uzbekistan 2-3, Lankan camp did well to bounce back and to pull off a convincing win by adopting strategic play. They started well to win the first set 25-19 but went down 18-25 in the second. They were made to fight hard to overcome their rival in the third set which earned them a close 25-22 win while they placed the final nail on the coffin with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia pulled off their maiden victory when they overcame Nepal 3 sets to 2. Saudi which lost all their previous games put up a belligerent performance to overcome Nepal. After a surprising 3-2 win over Afghanistan in their last outing, Nepal failed to make an impact as their attack remained toothless.
Saudi won the first (25-22), third (25-23) and the final set (16-14) losing the other two 21-25 and 25-27 respectively.
In the final game of day, Uzbekistan outplayed Bangladesh 3 sets to 1. The winners won the first (25-22), third (25-18) and the final set (25-13) while losing the second set (19-25).
