Sri Lanka Sevens rugby outfits both Men’s and Women’s will leave to Nepal today, in the morning hours to participate at the Asian Rugby Sevens trophy 2024.
Led by Tarinda Ratwatte and Coached by Nilfer Ibrahim the outfit, a well balanced one will be focusing to get the better of Kazakhstan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in the group encounters on Day 1 (4 Oct). Day 2 will be worked off with the knock out stages of the event played in Cup, Bowl and Challenge segments.
Meanwhile the ladies lock horns with India, Iran and Indonesia in the group stage on day 1, Both the Men’s and Women’s teams will be expecting to end on top to book their berth for the three leg Asia Rugby Sevens series in 2025. Ladies’ outfit is headed by R. Mahaduru with Shamli Nawas heading the coaching unit.
Speaking to Daily FT, Men’s Head Coach Nilfer Ibrahim said: “We had only a few sessions but all went well, combination looks really good and I am very happy with the preparations. Only concern is the Kathmandu climate as floods swept across the country and we need to adjust quickly.”
Speaking to Daily FT, Women’s Head Coach, Shamli Nawas said:” We had three weeks preparation, selection games from the time they started and ended as a very good understanding unit and playing some good sevens rugby. We want to play some good rugby and end on top in the end.”
