The 19th Asian Game’s Rugby Sevens Men’s tournament is scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from 23 to 27 September. National sevens outfit will compete under Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) flag and play alongside Taipei and South Korea in the group stages.
Former Trinitian and Kandy Sports Club place kicker, Tharinda Ratwatte will lead the outfit which will miss Srinath Sooriyabandara and Chatura Seneviratne, due to personal reasons. Meanwhile Adam Gauder, a Sri Lankan who is now domiciled in Australia, who is playing for a top club in Queensland has also joined the national sevens outfit for this tour.
With an aim of winning a medal at the Asian Games, intensive training commenced two months back firstly on Virtual High Performance Training under the guidance of Phill Greening a renowned international coach from the UK with the assistance of Sri Lanka Rugby High Performance Manager Kamal Jayathilaka and currently under the National Rugby Sevens Head Coach Dushan Lewke. SLR is coordinating well with Ministry of Sports, National Olympic Committee (NOC) and once again Nippon Paints has come forward as the Principal Sponsor for the Asian Games 2023 plus Webexpay, Ceylon Agro-Industries Ltd. (Kottu Mee) and Signature (Hameedias) too has come forward as the co-sponsors.
