Sri Lanka is poised to host Malaysia in an important rugby match at the Racecourse Ground on 19 April, with the winner earning a coveted spot in the 2025 Asia Rugby (AR) Top 4 tournament. This high-stake encounter not only determines qualification but also adds another chapter to the rich history between these two rugby nations which is likely to be played under lights to bring in a packed stadium.

The rugby rivalry between Sri Lanka and Malaysia spans several decades, with numerous encounters played. In 1990, the teams faced each other multiple times during the ARFU Asian Rugby Championships and Rugby World Cup qualifiers. Notably, in 1994, during the Rugby World Cup qualifiers, Sri Lanka faced Malaysia but did not secure victory. However, in 1997, during the 1999 Rugby World Cup qualifying rounds, Sri Lanka defeated Malaysia by 22/9 in Kuala Lumpur, showing their growing prowess on the international stage.

The early 2000 saw continued clashes. In the 2002 ARFU Asian Rugby Championship, Sri Lanka and Malaysia competed, with Sri Lanka emerging victorious. Again, in 2007, during the Rugby Asiad, Sri Lanka secured a win against Malaysia, reinforcing their competitive edge.

In the 2024 season, Malaysia faced challenges, suffering defeats against the UAE, Hong Kong, and South Korea in the AR Top 4 tournament. Conversely, Sri Lanka were in commendable form in the AR Division 1, securing victories over India and Kazakhstan, setting the stage for their qualification match against Malaysia.

The upcoming fixture at the Racecourse Ground is more than just a qualifier; it’s a testament to the enduring rivalry and mutual respect between Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Both teams have evolved over the years, with each encounter adding layers to their shared history. For Sri Lanka, a win would mark their return to the AR Top 4, reflecting their consistent development and ambition on the Asian rugby scene.

According to sources, Sri Lanka national selectors headed by Sidath Sampath had identified the initial 60 players and Sri Lanka Rugby is likely to write to the respective clubs and request for their availability due to the long season many could be carrying injuries.

Sanath Martis who guided Sri Lanka in AR Division 1 in 2024 as his closest competitor, Fazil Marija is out of the island next month due to his pre-arranged coaching program in New Zealand. Dushanth Lewke is also tipped to continue as the forwards coach while the tussle for three quarter coach will be between Nilfer Ibrahim and Saliya Kumara. Anyway, it’s interesting to note if DG will continue with the same coaching panel or call for applications as Sri Lanka is already late for the bus.
