Sri Lanka Under 20 boxers showed that they are no push overs, winning 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals at the 34th South Asian/South East Asian Boxing Championship in Penang, Malaysia recently.
A former Nalanda College boxer now a University of Sri Jayewardenepura student Pasindu Mihiran won the Gold medal in the 51kg segment. He was the team captain.
The Silver medals were won by Yasindu Premaratne (S.Thomas’ College, Mt.Lavinia) and Heshan Jayasinghe (St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy) for the 60kg and 63.5kg weight segments. Trinity College boxers Waruna Bandara and Salmaan Faris both won Bronze medals in the 64kg and 48kg segments respectively.
The youngest of the team of six was T. Meegalla who was an Under 16 boxer from Royal College came closer to a win but in the end missed out in winning a medal for his country. The team was coached by former Trinity boxer and coach Lahiru Senarathne. (SJ)
