Sri Lankan Airlines triumphs at Travel Trade Badminton

Sri Lankan Airlines retained the travel trade badminton, open and veterans titles, at the 24th Travel Trade Sports Club Badminton Championships 2024, sponsored by Walkers Tours and concluded recently at St. Joseph‘s College Indoor Sports Complex, Darley Road, Colombo 10.



The tournament got back on track after a lapse of five years, last held in 2018 at Mt. Lavinia.

14 teams participated in the ‘Open’ and six teams participated in the ‘Veterans’.



The ‘Open’ event was conducted on a Knock-Out format, a tie consisting of 1 men’s single, 1 men’s double, 1 women’s single and 1 women’s double and a mixed double and the following are the results from the Quarter Finals onwards.



Quarter Finals: Sri Lankan Airlines beat Esna Holidays, 3/0; Acorn Group beat Resplendent Ceylon, 3/2; Aitken Spence Travels “A” beat Araliya Beach Hotel Unawatuna, 3/2; Walkers and Whittalls beat Hilton Colombo Residencies, 3/0. 



Semi Finals: Sri Lankan Airlines beat Acorn Group, 3/0; Aitken Spence Travels “A” beat Walkers and Whittalls 3/2. 

Play off for the 3rd place: Walkers and Whittalls beat Acorn Group, 2/1.



Finals: Sri Lankan Airlines beat Aitken Spence Travels “A”, 4/1.



Veteran’s event for men Over-40 and women Over 35 was conducted on a round robin, a tie consisting 1 men’s single, 1 men’s double and 1 mixed double and following are the results from the Semi Finals onwards:

Semi Finals: Sri Lankan Airlines beat Walkers and Whittalls, 2/1; Aitken Spence Travels beat Galadari Hotel, 2/1 

Play off for the 3rd Place: Walkers and Whittalls beat Galadari Hotel 2/1



Finals: Sri Lankan Airlines beat Aitken Spence Travels, 2/0. 



The awards were given away by the Chief Guest, Walkers Tours CEO Nalaka Amaratunga, John Keells Group Vice President and TTSC former President Prabath Harshakumar, Immediate Past President Anil Hapugoda, President Dilshan Gnanapragasam, Vice President Shan Perera and Assistant Treasurer and John Keells Group Vice President Nalika Abeysuriya.
