The Sri Lankan Golf Ranking Tournament commenced at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) with national amateur golfers vying for valuable World Amateur ranking points.
The tournament promises four days of thrilling competition, featuring some of Sri Lanka›s top talents and seasoned professionals, as well as serving as a platform to select the Junior Asia Pacific tournament team, which will take place until 15 September.
Leading the amateur ranks is veteran Chanaka Perera, who is widely tipped as the favourite to clinch victory. Perera›s impressive record and consistent performance around the world stage make him a formidable contender. Adding to the excitement, Reshan Algama, the Junior Champion, currently ranks within the top 2000 world amateur players and is expected to provide stiff competition to Perera. Algama at 15 years old created history, earlier this year as the youngest to ever win this tournament and to add to the same in tandem will no doubt give stiff competition to Chanaka and Uchitha.
Uchitha Ranasighe and promising junior talent in the form of Jevahn Sathasivam and Jacob Norton are also in action in this event. Thejas Rathis Kanth will miss out due to his school examinations while Kaya Daluwatte is away in India.
One of the highlights of this event is the selection process for the Junior Asia Pacific tournaments in Thailand and Malaysia, scheduled for next month.
Sri Lanka›s seasoned golf professionals Anura Rohana, K. Prabagaran, and N. Thangaraja are also in action but Mithun Perera is missing from the event.
The inclusion of the Silver medal champions from the previous Prima Sunrise Regional Tournament, Adhithya and Janeesh Weerasinghe. Their presence adds an interesting dynamic to the field, as they look to build on their recent success.
