Sri Lions Sports Club, a dynamic force in Sri Lankan and international rugby, is poised to make their highly anticipated debut in the A-Division league with an opening match against the formidable Kandy SC at Nittawela on 15 December in front of a packed crowd.
Sri Lions Founder and President, Dr. Kelum Sujith Perera, shared the club’s global expansion plans, including collaborations with international partners, while reaffirming their commitment to nurturing local talent and promoting sports development in Sri Lanka. Highlighting the club’s incredible journey from its inception in Dubai to becoming a professional rugby outfit ready to compete at the highest level in Sri Lanka, he said: “Our mission goes beyond merely competing in the league. We aim to create opportunities for young Sri Lankan players to excel in a professionally managed club that adheres to international standards. This is about building a pathway for school leavers to continue their rugby careers and shine on national and global stages.”
Fair Play Award
Dr. Perera announced the introduction of an innovative Fair Play Award. This award, supported by the Sports Ministry, Sri Lanka Rugby, and Sri Lanka Rugby Football Referees Society, will recognise the club that best embodies the spirit of fair play throughout the A-Division season. “Rugby is a game of respect and camaraderie,” Dr. Perera underlined. “This award is our way of promoting integrity and sportsmanship while setting a benchmark for ethical conduct on and off the field. “The winning team will receive a cash prize of half a million rupees, underlining Sri Lions’ commitment to promoting ethical conduct and sportsmanship on and off the field.
Dr. Perera reiterated the club’s aspiration to compete on the international stage, stating, “Sri Lions is not just competing within the Sri Lankan community or against the eight A-Division clubs. Our competition is global. My dream is to see Sri Lions playing in Super Rugby one day. Let’s work together to make that happen.”
Dr. Kelum Sujith Perera expressed his appreciation for the unwavering support of sponsors, including main sponsor, Lakbima Cargo, Gold sponsor, JAT, Prestige, and others, whose contributions have been instrumental in the club’s success. He also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of players, coaches, and staff as they prepare for the challenges of the A-Division tournaments.
