Singer League Schools Rugby 2018

The Singer League Schools Rugby 2018 competition will move forward by another week with four cup segment matches and an equal number of plate trophy matches being worked off this weekend.

Out of the eight games, one encounter will take place in Kandy and another one in Kurunegala. The remainder of the six matches are to be worked off in Colombo.

The pick of the game will be the one between Kingswood College and an unbeaten St. Peter’s at Bambalapitiya while Trinity is all out to bounce back against Isipathana at Havelock Park. Javed Zarook, the St. Peter’s College skipper, will be back to lead the outfit. Liyanapathirana and Nilar will be the ones to watch out for the Randles Hill boys. Kingswood will depend heavily on Shashan Mohamed who is star player in attack who has split many good defences this season.

Trinity College, who were only able to get the better of St. Anthony’s and S. Thomas’, did play well in the second half of their game against St. Peter’s but ran out of time. Akitha Sakalasuriya, Amith Kulatunge, Vishwa Ranaraja and Zyd Faizal are the players to watch out for. Isipathana will depend heavily on skipper Ruberu who had a grand game last weekend in Kandy. His kick into touch and penalty kicks will be vital for Isipathana this season.

Defending champions Royal should have things their own way when they confront Wesley at Longden Place. Skipper Shabith Feroze, Thulaib Hassen and Janidu Dilshan are all playing at their peak. Shabbar’s Wesley will need to contain them but the continuity for 80 minutes will be a tough task.

St. Joseph’s too should have a good weekend with an easy win over Zahira College in Maradana. Gemunu Chethiya is the player to watch out for the Maradana lads.

Meanwhile, in the Plate segment, Vidyartha should have no difficulty overcoming DharmarajaCollege while St. Anthony’s and D.S. Senanayake should end up with wins. The encounter between the Thomians and Maliyadeva could be a close tussle. (SJ)
