The young footballers of Stafford International School (SIS) showcased remarkable talent and determination at the Samaposha Under-14 All Island School Football Championship, emerging as Runners-Up among 492 competing schools from across Sri Lanka. The final match, held on 7 February, was a thrilling contest that highlighted the skill and perseverance of the Staffordians.
Facing Muslim Central, Kalutara, the final was a nail-biting affair. Muslim Central took an early lead, but Aaron Richard quickly responded with a fantastic equaliser. Thenuga De Silva then put Stafford ahead with a brilliant goal, giving the team a 2-1 advantage. However, with just five minutes left on the clock, Muslim Central managed to equalise, sending the match into a dramatic penalty shootout.
During the penalties, Yash Amarasekera and Yaqub Muzammil successfully converted their shots, but Stafford fell short, with Muslim Central securing a 3-2 victory. Despite the loss, it was a remarkable achievement for the Stafford team to finish second in such a competitive tournament.
Adding to the team’s accolades, Yash Amarasekera was awarded the “Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament”, recognising his outstanding performance throughout the competition and in the final match. His exceptional goalkeeping skills were instrumental in the team’s journey to the final.
The team’s journey to the final was nothing short of extraordinary, and each player contributed to this incredible success. The squad consisted of: Raihan Hussain (Captain), Yash Amarasekera (Goalkeeper), Aaron Richard, Yaqub Muzammil, Thenuga De Silva, Abdallah Hussein, Shuraim Ameen, Abdulmalik Aslam, Nithum Meemaduma, Shanuk Eliyatamby, Pavan Jayaweera, Diano Shawain Abeygunawardana, Dihain Wickramasinghe and Darren Cooray.
The Staffordians played their hearts out throughout the tournament, demonstrating exceptional teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship. To be placed 2nd out of 492 schools is a monumental achievement, and the entire Stafford community is immensely proud of these young footballers.
This performance not only cements Stafford International School’s reputation as a rising powerhouse in school football but also inspires future generations of students to take up the sport and strive for greatness.
