Left-arm spinner Dilum Sudeera’s career best bowling performance of 8/50 and match bag of 13/97 propelled defending joint champions Police SC to the top of the Group A table on a rain hit third day of the SLC Major Club 3-day tournament where the majority of matches were affected by rain.
The match played at Surrey Village, Maggona saw Police SC dismiss Badureliya SC for 99 in their second innings and knock off the required 9 runs to win by 9 wickets to pick up the full points. In fact they along with Panadura SC were the only team to grab full points on a rain-hit Sunday.
Left-arm pacie Mohamed Dilshad’s career best match figures of 10/98 saw Panadura SC beat Ragama CC by 5 wickets at Panadura and move to third spot in Group A. Requiring another 84 runs on the final day, Panadura SC reached their target of 88 losing 5 wickets.
Both CCC and NCC managed to grab first innings points in their respective matches which ended in a draw. At the CCC grounds, CCC in reply to Nugegoda SWC’s first innings of 316 scored 434-7 with all-rounder Sonal Dinusha joining Lasith Croospulle as centurions. Croospulle had on the second day scored 150, and Dinusha who was unbeaten on 88 reached three figures in the 13 overs that was possible on the third and final day. In his innings of 107 off 108 balls Dinusha hit 7 fours, 4 sixes. Off-spinner Tillakaratne Sampath dismissed both centurions to end with figures of 4/113.
NCC retained top spot in Group B with a first innings win against Tamil Union at P Sara Oval. There was no play on the third and final day. NCC assured themselves of the points by taking a 21-run lead on the second day.
The following matches all ended in draws with hardly any play on the third and final day. Only 8 overs were possible at Colts grounds where Ace Capital CC in reply to Colts’ first innings of 592-9 declared added 43 to their overnight score to finish on 213-4.
At Thurstan grounds only 6 overs were bowled during which period SSC replying to Kandy Customs CC’s first innings of 424, moved to 382-6 adding 30 runs to the overnight total.
No play was possible on the final day in the following games: Chilaw Marians CC 375-8 v Negombo CC at Hambantota, BRC 230 v Kurunegala YCC 168-7 at Welagedara Stadium. – [ST]
