Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva said that travelling reserve fast bowler Asitha Fernando has received his visa to travel to the USA for the ICC T20 World Cup, but not Kusal Mendis.
“There is a protocol which Kusal has to go through. He is in the process of submitting some reports which he has done today and hopefully we should be hearing something from the US embassy tomorrow,” said De Silva.
Fernando and Mendis are due to travel together to the USA. Due to the visa delays they could not travel with the Sri Lanka team that left for the USA on 14 June.
“There are also two others who have basically applied late because there were late inclusions and they are waiting for an appointment to be given, Janith Liyanage and the throw down coach. They are not in the 15-member squad,” said De Silva.
Liyanage is one of the four travelling reserves and comes under the purview of Sri Lanka Cricket and not the ICC.
The participating teams will officially come under the ICC only after 25 May when they will be located at their respective hotels for the T20 World Cup.
“The Sri Lanka squad has gone in advance to USA to train and get acclimatised to the conditions. They arrived in the USA yesterday (Wednesday) and are having their training at Morrisville Facility in North Carolina, before moving to Florida for their two warm-up games,” said De Silva. Sri Lanka takes on Netherlands on 28 May and Ireland on 31 May. They open their T20 World Cup campaign against South Africa at New York on 3 June. - (ST)
