Group C table leaders Tamil Union suffered a setback when they lost a rain-affected match of the SLC Major T20 inter-club tournament by four runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method to Police SC yesterday.
The win catapulted Police SC to the top of the group with five points from three matches, while Tamil Union dropped to second place with four points from the same number of games.
Police SC did extremely well to dismiss the strong Tamil Union batting for 125, and were in a strong position to force a win when rain interrupted play at the end of 15 overs with their score on 92-3, which was three runs more than the D/L method score. With play unable to proceed further Police SC were declared winners.
Leg-spinner Supun Madushanka was the standout bowler for Police SC with four wickets. The third wicket stand of 61 between Dilhara Polgampola (40*) and Mahesh Priyadarshana (39) ensured Police SC kept their nose ahead of the required target.
The intermittent rain played havoc with the rest of the matches forcing the BRC v Ragama CC and the Sebastianites v Kandy Customs CC matches to end in a No result, while three other games were abandoned without a ball bowled.
BRC invited to bat first struggled to 94-6 off 16 overs before rain washed out play. Tillakaratne Sampath, younger brother of famed Tillakaratne Dilshan top scored with 34, but the rest of the batting laboured against the leg-spin of Janaka Sampath whose three wickets included the scalps of Sampath and BRC skipper Bhanuka Rajapaksa.
