The much-awaited tournament which teed-off on Saturday in the most picturesque golf course in Asia will no doubt find its way to the club’s annual calendar of events following the successful launch of the club’s inter-nation encounter organised to promote the sport in Nuwara Eliya.
A record number of players representing clubs in Singapore, India, Malaysia, the UK, China, Korea, the Maldives, the Philippines, Japan, the US, Pakistan and the host country Sri Lanka, participated in, as one of the players described, a “gruelling 18 hole” challenge.
Jerry and Louise Huxtable along with John and Iren Scarth represented the winning team.
The First Runner Up position went to Guindy Hackers from India. Representing the team were Raja Ramachandran, Venkat Krishnan, Krishnan Ganapathy and Babu Dhandapani.
The Second Runner Up went to Team Australia which comprised Annesley Gunawardana, Malan Gunawardana, Rohan de Silva and Edward Nelson.It was interesting to witness the five member team from Maldives who made their first appearance on Saturday, for a golf tournament of this nature. The tournament was sponsored by MasterCard, who together with their issuing partner Commercial Bank released a golf-branded credit card for NEGC membership to mark this tournament.
NEGC President Major General Srinath Rajapaksa delivering his welcome speech to all participants and guests said that it was memorable occasion to golf in Nuwara Eliya as a record number of foreign players had participated in a tournament. He thanked the Heads of Mission of countries and their staff for coordinating and sending in their representatives to this tournament. He expressed his appreciation to CH17 Loyalty, Classic Destinations, Zam Gems, Bethany 101 and Stone ‘N’ String for their support towards the event.
He further added that NEGC Club Captain Firaz Hameed and Vice-Captain Priyanga Hapugalle had made a tremendous contribution towards staging this event.
This event will be the first step towards making Nuwara Eliya a hub for golf tourism in Sri Lanka, the President added.
