Sri Lanka Test spinner and Moors SC Captain Ramesh Mendis bowled his team to their first win of the ongoing SLC Major Club 50-over tournament with a five-wicket haul at Moors SC grounds yesterday.
In a match reduced to 35 overs a side due to bad weather conditions, Police SC were dismissed for 105 in 28.5 overs with Mendis returning figures of 5/23 with his off-breaks and Sri Lanka Under-19 all-rounder Malsha Tharupathi 2/15 with his leg-spin. Moors SC knocked the runs off in 23 overs reaching 106-3 with Janishka Perera contributing an unbeaten 35 off 36 balls.
Sebastianites squeezed out a four-run win on the DLS method against CCC at Panadura. In a 34-over match CCC recovered from losing their first six wickets for 82 runs to post a decent total of 177 in 33.5 overs. Sonal Dinusha led CCC’s recovery with a valiant 80* off 88 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes). Fast bowler Isitha Wijesundara was the wrecker-in-chief with career best figures of 4/23. Sebastianites chasing a revised target of 104 off 21 overs scored 107-4 with Dushan Vimukthi 37* off 39 balls (3 fours, 2 sixes).
Colts’ young pair of Dunith Wellalage and Jehan Daniel struck fifties apiece and shared a fifth wicket partnership of 116 to help them secure their second win and retain top position in Group A at Colts grounds. Colts lost their first four wickets for 23 before Wellalage (51 off 60 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) and Daniel (71 off 74 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes) lifted them to 213-8 off 39 overs. Ragama CC chasing a revised target of 170 off 27 overs were restricted to 103-7 mainly by spinners Muditha Lakshan (4/28) and Akila Dananjaya (2/16), giving Colts a win by 66 runs on the DLS method.
Wet ground conditions at Welagedara Stadium saw the match between Kurunegala YCC and Galle CC end in a no-result without a ball being bowled. – (ST)
