Sri Lanka’s netball star Tharjini Sivalingam was able to once again highlight her value as a star who has contributed significantly to the country’s netball cause by dominating the Asian Netball Championship recently.
The young Sri Lankan side showed that they had the depth to complement their 2.08-metre goal-shooter Sivalingam, with three other players in the starting XI standing over 1.8 metres. Sivalingam, the tallest netball player in Asia, displayed amazing skills as a goal-shooter, playing a pivotal role in helping the Sri Lankan netball team secure the championship by defeating Singapore 69-50 in the final.
Sivalingam, who is a netballer of international repute, is also a banker by profession. She joined Seylan Bank in 2005 and works in the Liability Products Management Department.
Commenting on the victory, Sivalingam added: “It gives me immense pride and brings honour to my team to bring back the Asian Championship after nine years. The support I received from the team members and the coaches is commendable. Further, I must also thank Seylan Bank, which has always been there supporting my passion by providing flexible work hours, timely sponsorship and other support.”
In addition, as ‘The bank with a heart’, Seylan Bank also extended its support to the Sri Lanka national netball squad by patronising them during a tour of Malawi last month and at the Asian Netball Championship by providing necessary attire and obligatory resources for the series.
Sivalingam was also awarded a gold medal in 2009 for her outstanding performances at the national level and was named the Best Shooter in 2011. Further, in 2012 she led the Sri Lankan team at the international level.
