Three youngsters—Reshan Algama, Jacob Norton, and Kaya Daluwatte—will tee off at the Thai Singha Junior World Golf Open Championship from 31 October to 3 November at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course in Thailand. The individual event will be played over 72 holes during the four days. There will be players from 25 countries around the globe.
Reshan Algama, from Colombo International School, stands out as the country’s highest world amateur-ranked junior player. He has been a rising star in the junior golf scene, recently making history as the first Sri Lankan to compete at the prestigious USGA Junior in Detroit and earning an exemption to play in the US Amateur qualification in Minnesota. His remarkable performance at the Asia-Pacific Junior Championship, where he secured a sixth-place finish, further cemented his status as a golfer to watch. He is currently at 573rd ranking in amateur ranking.
Jacob Norton from Stafford International School – another junior sensational player at the age of 16 played in the 14th edition at the same course last year. He returns to Thailand as a stronger, steadier, and more experienced player having successfully competed in several national ranking and junior open tournaments this year.
Kaya Daluwatta who is also 16 years, is the only Sri Lankan female golfer ranked in the world amateur rankings. Her participation in this tournament shows her potential to elevate women’s golf in Sri Lanka and beyond. Kaya won the Nepal Open Women’s Amateur and secured a fifth-place finish at the Asia Pacific Junior Championships in Philippines.
Last year in Thailand, both Reshan Algama and Kaya Daluwatte represented Sri Lanka and finished in the top half of the leaderboard, in 11th and 19th place, respectively. (SJ)
