In a fiercely contested final with plenty of frayed tempers, played under atrocious ground conditions, The Traveler Global lifted their own trophy, by beating SriLankan Airlines by 02 goals to 01 in the Annual Travel Trade Sports Club Soccer “Sevens” 2023, concluded on Sunday 11 June at the K.A.D. Janaka Ranawaka Stadium, Rajagiriya.
As the scores stood dead locked, 1- all at full time, the game went into extra time; The Traveler Global got the clincher with the extraordinary winning goal scored by their Goalkeeper Mohamed Haizer. (2-1).
In the League stage, the 10 teams pooled into 02 groups, played on a round robin, consisting 20 matches.
At the completion of the league stage, the 02 top teams from each group qualified for the final round, namely from Group “A”, The Traveler Global and Mermaid Hotel and Club, Mahawaskaduwa and from Group “B” – SriLankan Airlines and Connaissance de Ceylon.
Final round match results
Qualifier: SriLankan Airlines beat Traveler Global, 2/1 on penalties (Full time Nil –all); thus Sri Lankan Airlines went straight to the final.
Eliminator (1): Mermaid Hotel and Club beat Connaissance de Ceylon, 1-Nil, thus Mermaid Hotel qualified for the Semi Finals and Connainnance de Ceylan advanced to play in the “Plate”
Semi-Final: The Traveler Global beat Mermaid Hotel and Club on penalties, 3/2 (full time 1-all); thus Traveler Global advanced to the final.
Play-off for 3rd Place: Mermaid Hotel and Club beat Connaissance de Ceylon, 2-Nil.
Final: The Traveler Global beat SriLankan Airlines, 2/1 in extra time (full time 1-all)
Special Awards: Best Goalkeeper - Mohamed Haizer and the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament - Theekshana Udara Ratnayake (both from Traveler Global)
The Tournament which was revived after a lapse of 04 years was sponsored by The Traveler Global. Awards were given away by the Chief Guest, The Traveler Global Director/General Manager Riza Yusoof, Travel Trade Sports Club President Anil Hapugoda and TTSC Committee Member/Event Coordinator Dhanushka de Alwis.
