Trinity Vs Antonians

By Shamseer Jaleel

The Trinity College Under-19 rugby outfit got the better of the Antonians by 32 points (5 tries, 2 conversions, 1 penalty) to 19 points (3 tries, 2 conversions) in their Dialog Inter Schools Rugby League encounter played at the Pallekele Rugby Stadium yesterday.

At the short breather, Trinity led 22/7.

Antonians put up better performances though ending up on the losing side of this encounter.

They were very good in territory play, gaining the much needed space; sadly their loose play was far below standard – giving away two tries – which was the difference between the two outfits in the end.

Trinity opted to spread the ball wide and play through their speedy three-quarters who scored. They looked threatening and yards faster in every single move they made. Antonians drew first blood in the seventh minute of the game through a forwards’ rush with Mohamed Faraz scoring. It was converted by Omitha Dissanayake. Two minutes later, Trinity reduced the gap with their fullback Yevan Hulangamuwa penalty. It took Trinity another 10 minutes to touch down their first try through a sweeping three-quarter move, ending in a try for Minula Yaddehige.

A few minutes later, Ravin Ilangakoon touched down for Trinity with Hulangamuwa adding the extras to take a 15/7 lead. Trinity scored their third try through burly forward Shrayan Sathiskumar to take the short breather 22/7.

After the turnaround, centre Usman Safraz scored an intercepted try. Antonians hit back through a Kalpa Lakmina try. Anuhas Kodituwakku, coming in the later half, scored a solo effort, kicking and controlling the ball to score far right. Antonians scored a consolation try through Oshan Gunaratne to which Omitha Dissanayake added the extra two points.

Referee was Ishanka Abeykoon.
