Trinity College edged out D S Senanayake College 5/0 in a hard-fought finalin the All Island Under-16 ten-a-side rugby Tournament at Pallekele yesterday.
At the short breather, there was no scoring by both teams. Later in the second half, Trinity scored through Dimath Ambepitiya with 2 minutes to go in the final whistle where both teams dished out exceptional rugby for the appreciative crowd. Dimath won the Best Player award.
Trinity was led by Udan Wijekoon with Priyantha Gunaratne heading the coaching unit, and also won the Central Province seven-a-side Tournament earlier this year. Trinity scored 142 points in their six games, giving away only two tries in the whole tournament.
Royal settled for the Plate segment when they got the better of St. Peter’s 15/7. Meanwhile, defending champion Isipathana had an unhappy end playing in the Bowl segment but was able to edge out Ananda 10/7 in a close contest. Science did not go empty-handed to Mount Lavinia as they settled for the Shield segment win by 17/0 over Lumbini.
