St Peters favored to pull it off
By Shamseer Jaleel
The much looked forward Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Sevens will be worked off on 20 and 21 April in Colombo. Due to the ordinary-level exams in early May and injury concerns, many leading Rugby schools have decided to keep away from the tournament. The likely venue is Royal College ground at Reid Avenue.
S’Thomas, Trinity, Wesley, D.S., Kingswood, Zahira, St. Anthony’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Sylvester’s, Zahira and Thurstan had decided to keep away from this event. This gives opportunity for lesser known schools in rugby such as Carey, Sri Piyarathna and Sri Rahula to lock horns in the shorter version of the game. Education Ministry had given approval for this tournament.
This year, St. Peter’s College won the Zahira Rugby Sevens beating Isipathana 17/5 in the Cup final, but the Schools Rugby defending champions are Isipathana who beat St. Peter’s last year at Reid Avenue.
