Volleyball Federation’s new Chief commits to popularise national sport throughout Sri Lanka

The new President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation Kanchana Jayaratne says that steps will be taken to popularise volleyball, the national sport of Sri Lanka, throughout the country.

He was speaking to the media on the 24th regarding the future plans of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Association.

According to the Chairman, a program will be set up to obtain information on volleyball clubs and sports grounds in Sri Lanka first.

It is also planned to launch a program called ‘Talent Hunt’ to find talented young players from all over the island. In collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, district volleyball training pools have been established and beach volleyball and indoor volleyball tournaments will be held annually with the participation of junior and youth tournaments and foreign sportsmen and sportswomen.

Volleyball coaches will also be registered and identity cards will be issued and ceremonies will be organised to honour national volleyball players, coaches and umpires.

A ‘Volleyball Data Centre’ will also be set up to provide information on the sport of volleyball from the inception of the Volleyball Federation to the present day. A Volleyball Museum will also be set up at the Galle Volleyball House.

A special program will also be prepared to further popularise beach volleyball and annual volleyball matches will be introduced among the main schools.

A program will be prepared to develop volleyball in the estate sector and estate competitions will be resumed in the estate sports divisions. In collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, the focus is on providing employment opportunities in the public and private sectors for national level athletes and introducing a system of providing sports equipment at affordable prices.
