Ireland’s assistant coach who is also their batting and wicket-keeping coach Gary Wilson was confident that they can save the second Test match when play resumes on the fifth and final day at Galle today.
“We had two tough days for our bowlers but we are on a high. Although we lost two wickets, we equipped ourselves very well in the 22 overs,” said Wilson at the end of the fourth day.
“I think it’s important going into tomorrow that the pitch hasn’t deteriorated massively and as things stand at the moment, we have a great opportunity to bat for long periods of time. We’ve got some really good batters who can confidently go in there and do a good job.”
“It’s important that we don’t just go there and block. We go and play negatively and we bring them into the game a lot more. So, rotations and singles will be important. I have full faith in the guys that they will get the job done tomorrow.” Speaking further Wilson said: “We have shown in Test match cricket that we have got the application, the attitude and most importantly the skill levels to bat for long periods of time. The mood in the dressing room has been good throughout in both Test matches. We are happy to be competing to be the way we are, especially in this Test match. Quite a sense of pride from the backroom staff in the way the guys are approaching it and the application they are showing.”
“They are in a very privileged position to be playing cricket for Ireland and they are well aware of that. So far, we love the opportunities we’ve got. Three test matches in a row inside four weeks. We hopefully learnt a bit from the first Test match.” (ST)
