  • Beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets for first win on tour

A rain-truncated match reduced to 15 overs suited the West Indies style of play as they recorded their first win on the tour of Sri Lanka winning the second WT20I by six wickets on the DLS method at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Cricket Stadium, Hambantota yesterday.

Skipper Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor, two of their most experienced batters scored 29 and 28* respectively, sharing an opening partnership of 44 as West Indies successfully chased down their revised target of 99 off 15 overs with 5 balls to spare.

Sri Lanka could have made the contest much tighter and even swung the result their way if their fielders were more accurate with their throws at the stumps as several run out opportunities went begging.

Invited to bat first Sri Lanka progressed to 89-4 in 15.2 overs when the rains came to cut short their innings.

Vishmi Gunaratne (24) and Chamari Athapaththu (26) gave them a steady start posting 44 for the first wicket. Afy Fletcher troubled the middle order picking up four wickets with her leg breaks as the rest of the batters failed to capitalise on the start.

With the three-match series level at one-all the two teams will go into the third and decisive match tomorrow (28 June) at the same venue. – (ST)
